Discipline #1:
Compassion
Here are practical ways to build compassion into your day:
Toward others
Listen fully — put your phone away, make eye contact, and resist the urge to fix or judge.
Start with small acts — hold a door, check in on a friend, give someone the benefit of the doubt in traffic. Tiny actions, repeated, build a compassionate mindset.
Set a daily intention — each morning ask, "How do I want to show up today?" (patience in meetings, gentleness with a family member, openness to strangers).
Notice suffering without flinching — when you see someone struggling (a stressed coworker, a difficult relative), pause and acknowledge it rather than looking away.
Toward yourself
Replace self-criticism — when you catch a harsh inner voice, ask, "Would I say this to a friend?" Then reframe: "I'm doing my best, and that's enough."
Take a self-compassion break — in a stressful moment, pause, place a hand on your heart, and say: "This is hard. I'm not alone in this. May I be kind to myself."
Practice loving-kindness meditation — even 5 minutes of silently repeating "May I be happy, may I be at peace" (then extending it to others) measurably increases compassion over time.
Keep a compassion journal — note one moment you felt compassion, one moment you judged yourself harshly, and one small act of kindness you performed.
